Mit einer Spende von 7.000 Euro überraschten Dr. Ute Probst, Dr. Jürgen Budde und Dr. Ulf Schutter den “Freundeskreis der Jugendbibliothek im Türmchen“. Mit dieser Summe halfen die drei Marler Ärzte ein spannendes Projekt realisieren zu können – den “Lesegarten“.

“Wir freuen uns mit dieser Summe etwas für die Kinder in Marl bewegen zu können“, so die Ärzte. Bei einem Rundgang durch die bestehenden Räumlichkeiten gewannen sie einen Eindruck von der Vielfalt des Angebots im Türmchen.
Bücher zu vielen Themen, Hörspiele, aber auch Lernsoftware und kindgerechte PC-Spiele gibt es dort.
“Mein Sohn war früher auch im Türmchen“, erzählte Dr. Jürgen Budde dem Vorsitzenden des Freundeskreises, Werner Eisbrenner. Seit mehr als 30 Jahren sind mehrere Generationen mit dem Türmchen groß geworden.
“Die Kinder haben hier ein richtiges kleines Reich“, geriet Dr. Ute Probst, selbst Mutter eines Mädchens, ins Schwärmen.
Dieses “Reich“ soll mit dem “Lesegarten“ weiter wachsen. Ein Teil des unteren Türmchenbereichs würde dabei verglast und einen deutlichen Raumgewinn mit sich bringen. Mit der Spende ist der Eigenkapitalbedarf gedeckt, Kreditzusagen bestehen. Was fehlt ist eine Zusage der Stadt Marl. Die drei Ärzte hoffen ebenso wie Werner Eisbrenner und die Kinder im Türmchen auf einen positiven Bescheid aus der Verwaltung.
Die Spendensumme stammt aus dem Überschuss des kürzlich aufgelösten “Bundesverband niedergelassener Akupunkturärzte Deutschlands“, dem die Ärzte im Vorstand angehörten.
Da Akupunktur etabliert ist und der Ausbildungsbedarf gedeckt, löste sich der Verband auf. Satzungsgemäß spendeten sie den Betrag einem wohltätigen Zweck.

Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture, thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song
had been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel
of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much more stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks
to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that
he was ‚constantly‘ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‚She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,‘ Pete,

The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the Kath and
Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick to issue their shock at the surprising cover version.

Tobacco giant Philip Morris International (PMI) has agreed
to buy British inhaler maker Vectura for £1 billion, as it expands

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering
Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look
set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent
the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major
parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure
thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the
first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which
they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you
only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big
money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‚running scared‘ with
the policy and warned the reform would ’not stop the rot‘

said: ‚What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up‘
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political
party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned
the proposed new laws, labeling them a ’stitch-up‘, ‚outrageous‘ and ‚a rort,
not a reform‘.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might
secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency
measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have
been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench
effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by
Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and
Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running
a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately,
by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand
the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want
to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only
the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging
the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these
proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‚clean things
up‘.

funded‘ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‚I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas
employee,‘ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo

‚I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the
only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‚Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‚That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And
I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.‘
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be
booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‚he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,‘ Aston said.
‚The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight
closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‚This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted
and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going „Geez, I hope there is a spare seat“.
‚You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at
Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.
‚So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these
upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).‘
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a
travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get
up there.
‚These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‚For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got
chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‚They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane
on personal travel.
‚A normal person would say „Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.‘
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‚very well paid compared to the average worker‘.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‚The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade‘.
‚All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.‘

Joaquin reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the
2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie at the time
of writing.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this
year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score
with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31 percent
and a critic score of 33 percent.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of
opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million –
but the number has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually
landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.

The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film
Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.
However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to
exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled
all product launches for the year in Russia.

U.S.
dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to
a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12
pips lower than the previous late session close at 7.066.
Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China
(PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker
than a Reuters‘ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for
the first time since Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to
offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far
this month, due to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5%
firmed for the year-to-date.
China equities‘ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news,
said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the
offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
„Historically, fizzling of China equities‘ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities‘ surge,“ the strategists said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting
additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China
asset sentiment. Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened
in Nov. 2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09% in Asian trade.
The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a
slower than anticipated U.S. roll out of its IQOS
heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was
positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two
thirds of its net revenues to come from „smoke-free“ products by 2030,
up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver
of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS‘ entry
into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine
products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists
across a host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch
in four cities in two unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch
would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest
version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and
expected it from 2025, he continued.
„We need to warm up the tyres,“ he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine
tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10
states in the first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
„now looks delayed until ILUMA,“ Owen Bennett,
equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for
PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by
2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating
outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious
volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S.
would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues
there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

The ‚cataclysmic‘ Minoan eruption of Thera – one of the largest in the history of the
planet – took place a century earlier than first thought,
scientists say.
The ancient eruption devastated the island of Terea, modern-day Santorini,
and decimated fledgling societies across the Mediterranean as the
volcanic activity also triggered an earthquake and a tsunami
in the region.
Folklore claims the eruption kickstarted a wave so big it drowned
an entire city, creating the mythical realm of Atlantis.
Researchers found an ancient olive branch buried under rocks on the island of Santorini and
used radiocarbon analysis to reveal a more accurate date for the destructive natural disaster.
It is now believed the eruption took place between 1,627 and 1,600 BCE, more than a century earlier
than the 1,500 BCE date previously suggested by archaeologists.

Charred olive wood is found throughout the archaeological record and provides a consistent way to date
ancient events, especially in the Mediterranean region.
The latest research took samples from an ancient piece
of wood unearthed in fragments of volcanic rock and compared it to two modern-era
examples – one from a living tree and another from a specimen that
had died a few years earlier.
Dr Elizabetta Boaretto of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel took 20 samples from the living
tree and 11 from the dead branches, which had been cut in 2013.
These samples were used to asses how olive trees
grow, and apply the latest findings to the ancient sample unearthed in Santorini.

Until now, it was believed the outermost ring of wood in the 3,500 year-old olive tree sample was formed just before the
branch was buried alive by the eruption.
According to the study: ‚The outermost rings of an olive branch buried during the Santorini volcanic eruption is regarded as crucial evidence
for the date of this cataclysmic event.‘
However, Dr Boaretto and her colleagues discovered that olive
trees are different to most trees and do not produce visible growth rings each year.
Using this found knowledge, scientists tested other samples from the ancient olive tree branch to discovered parts of
the branch almost a century older than previous estimates for the volcanic eruption on Thera.
This cross section of one of the olive tree trunks is an example of the samples used by the researchers.
They say the growth pattern of the olive tree was unusual and
therefore may mean the original estimation of the Santorini eruption was incorrect

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the
country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products
and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds
of its net revenues to come from „smoke-free“ products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as
it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver
of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS‘ entry
into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across
a host of key U.S. states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after PMI
receives approval to sell the latest version, known as
IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October
and expected it from 2025, he continued.
„We need to warm up the tyres,“ he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding
launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
„now looks delayed until ILUMA,“ Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues
to come from sales of such products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand
ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for
revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2
billion in revenues there in 2024, even before
IQOS ILUMA, executives said.
